Bites that Look Similar to Bed Bug Bites
Many insects can leave bite marks that look similar to bed bug bites. The following is a list of insects that can leave similar looking bites:
Mosquito Bites |
 | |
Mosquito bites are most frequent on exposed skin on the arms and legs. The bite looks like a raised pink welt that is usually ½ inch or smaller in size.
Unlike bed bugs, mosquito bites will never be in straight lines and will be randomly placed. Mosquito bites are also a light pink color whereas bed bug bites are a dark pink or red color.

Flea Bites |
 | |
Flea bites are commonly found on the legs and ankles (possibly arms and torso on small children). They are about ¼ inch in size and are pink with a red/dark red dot in the middle.
Unlike bed bug bites, flea bites have a red dot in the middle (where the flea bit). Flea bites are also much more common on the legs, and while bed bugs may bite the legs, the mostly bite the torso and back of a person.

Chigger Bites |
 | |
Chigger bites occur mostly when someone has been walking through or near woods. They are a common pest for hikers. They can bite anywhere, but most of the time bite the legs and ankles or any place that has brushed against grass, branches, or trees.
Unlike bed bug bites, chigger bites do not occur on the torso unless the person has been outside near chigger infested areas without a shirt on. If you have not been near woods in the past 24-48 hours, the chances are they are not chigger bites.

How to Recognize Bed Bug Bites
Several Bites - One fairly easy way to recognize bed bug bites is by the patterns they leave behind. It is rare to only have one or two bites, bed bugs usually leave numerous bites behind. Most people get 30+ bed bug bites at a time.
Bite Clusters - Most of the time bed bugs will bite in lines, and these lines will usually be 3 bites long (called breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Some lines may be 2 bites long. The picture below shows and highlights these lines.

Other Symptoms - Bed bug bites can take a few days to appear after the victim has been bitten, but studies show the more times someone has been bitten the faster the bites will appear.
Where Do Bed Bugs Bite - Since bed bugs usually live inside of mattress', they will bite the parts of a person's body that is in contact with the mattress. So if someone normally sleeps on their left side, their left side will have the most amount of bed bug bites. Bed bugs are also attracted to the heat a person gives off at nigh, therefore the torso receives a majority of bed bug bites since it is usually the warmest at night.
Most of the time bed bugs will bite exposed areas of skin. People who sleep in shirts report less bed bug bites on their torso than people who sleep without shirts on.
You can tell by the picture to the left that a majority of the bed bug bites are on the left side, indicating that this person was most likely sleeping on his left side that night.
